On March 2, 1987 a group of about 30 people met for the purpose of organizing a new church. This group of 30 individuals would launch the church that eventually came to be known as New Community. Our first service was on Wednesday, March 4
1987, a prayer meeting and Bible study of about 100 people in the bingo room at the Chief Petty Officer’s Association. The following Sunday, March 8
, we held Sunday School classes in the Girl’s Club building with Sunday morning worship at the CPOA. A few weeks later we moved to the old Parkview Shopping Center. Soon thereafter, we changed our name from Southern Baptist Mission to Bethany Baptist Church.
