The New Bostonians was founded in 1947. Our first president was Bob Friend. You might remember him as the CEO of Friend's Baked Beans.
The chapter then and currently is composed of men whose unique hobby is singing four part harmony. Other well-known individuals who were members of the chapter were Francis Quimet, the United States Open golf champion, Vaughn Monroe, the famous orchestra leader and vocalist. Two of his all-time hits were "Ghost Riders in the Sky" and "Dance Ballerina Dance". Tom Hussey, worked with Fred Hoye broadcasting the Red Sox games and was also one of our members.
Two other famous entities that we were fortunate to have as members were the Boston Common quartet who won the international championship contest in 1980. The Common were incredibly popular with audiences all over the U.S. and Europe for many years. Two of their most significant appearances were singing with the Boston Pops and also as guests on the Today television show. A gentlemen named Lou Perry was another famous member. His notoriety was within Barbershopping members. He was the coach for the Boston Common and an arranger/teacher for over 40 years. His music is sung over the entire Barbershop world.
