Title

North Central Area Schools

Description

In the late 19th Century, the neighboring towns of Hermansville, Powers and Spalding were all thriving communities because of the lumber industry. By the 1920's, each of the towns established their own school districts. Hermansville Public Schools chose the Redskins as a mascot, and Powers-Spalding Public Schools chose the Tigers. In the late 1960's, most of the lumber industry had slowed and left the area, causing many people to leave the area as well. In 1971, the two districts decided to merge into a new school district and thus North Central Area Schools was born. The school's first year was the 1971-1972 school year and it had nearly 1,000 students K-12. The Powers-Spalding High School/Elementary building was used for Grades 4-12 (It was changed in 1995 to Grades 7-12 after an addition to the Hermansville Building). For the elementary, Hermansville replaced the old wooden school building with a newer and more modern facility in 1971 to accommodate the school district. The elementary was known as Hermansville Elementary until 1993, when the old Hermansville Public School building was demolished and was replaced with an addition which would accommodate more students. The name was changed to North Central Elementary in 1994.
