The Two Moon nodes Rahu and Ketu, which are the shadows and have strong, influence on each other and of course other planets. The Kaal Sarp Yog in simple words means the bad Time of the Serpent. Kaal meaning bad time and Sarp meaning Serpent. Rahu is referred to as head of the serpent and Ketu the tail of the serpent. Therefore when there is the placement of all 7 planets between Rahu and Ketu then Kaal Sarp Yog is formed. According to the situation of Rahu and Ketu in 12 houses of horoscope there are Kaal Sarp Yogas of 12 types depending on the placement in the 12 houses. The Kaal Sarp Yog is of two types ascending and descending. If all the 7 planets are eaten away by Rahu's mouth then it is ascending Kaal Sarp Yog. If all planets are situated in back of Rahu then Descending Kaal Sarp Yog is formed.
If all houses situated between Rahu and Ketu have planets then Kaal Sarp Yog is fully effective. If Sun or Moon is present with Rahu or Ketu then this yoga is more lethal. Also according to horoscope whenever the mahadasha or antardasha of Rahu/Ketu comes then Kaal Sarp Yog is more effective. But if in a horoscope all 7 planets are between Rahu and Ketu but few planets are outside the axis of Rahu and Ketu then partial Kaal Sarp Yog is formed.

Then Effect of Kaal Sarp Yog depends upon the placement of Rahu and Ketu in the Lagan Chart. Like stated earlier there is 12 formation of Kaal Sarp Yog whose effect will depend upon which houses they afflict in the birth chart.
