Construction of objects on this dimension requires placement of unique atoms or small clusters of atoms. The long-term vision of nanotechnology includes self-replication and enormous parallelism, in which nanotechnology machines work together to deliver macro-scale forms and functions. The combination of self-replication and enormous parallelism creates enormous potential for nanosize invention. However, since these are also attributes of life science viruses, it is key that these processes be carefully controlled.
