"Buffalo Soldiers" of the high seas could apply to the original members of The National Association of Former Stewards and Stewardmates (NAFSAS), Inc. The honorable title of "Steward" was a military discipline within the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard as early as 1797. Between the 1st and 2nd World Wars African-Americans and Asian-Pacific descendants were allowed to enlist in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard only as a Steward.
