Title
Nautical Research Guild, Inc.
Description
Since 1948 the Nautical Research Guild has filled a niche in the ship modeling world by emphasizing the necessity of proper, original and deep research prior to attempting to create a historically accurate ship model. To that end the NRG, since its inception, has been publishing the world renowned Nautical Research Journal, a quarterly magazine dedicated to assist each modeler to reach his or her highest level of personal achievement. The Journal, generally considered to be the best of its kind in the world, is subscribed to by modelers, researchers, historians, maritime artists, museum curators and a variety of representatives from the world of academia.
Members of the guild have access to several benefits including, but not limited to, a technical assistance network, a fledgling lending research library, various Guild-generated modeling publications, a custom listing of other members in their region should they wish to make contact, regional workshops and an annual conference held in different venues throughout the country and Canada.
Looking to the future, the Board of Directors is deeply concerned with the current trend of maritime museums being forced to keep up with our changing society in which the youth have become dependent upon instant gratification. The computer, with all its marvels, video games, hand held electronic games etc. have eroded the patience of our youth. Museums are experiencing a fall off of attendance as so many of the young see a museum tour as a long, boring activity. Thus the Curators are serving the current public by means of supplying push button displays that make things move and talk to the button pusher in order to keep the youngsters attention. This appears to be a growing solution to the slide in attendance problem. Unfortunately, many museums are forced to relegate ship models to storage, thus freeing up space for the modern “action” exhibits. This necessity, with its resultant disappearance of quality, accurately constructed ship models, is what triggers our worry.
