- an ancient art technique dating as far back as the 5th Century BC using beeswax and colored pigments. The ancient Greeks painted portraits and mythological scenes on wood panels, heating the wax and fusing the layers together, creating a permanence lasting thousands of years. The early Christians in Egypt made beautiful, luminous paintings of holy figures and because of its protective qualities, encaustic wax was used as a varnish for frescoes and statues during the early middle ages. Created as memorials to the deceased, the Egyptian Fayum funeral portraits are another of history's earliest preserved encaustic paintings.
