Description
Mission Statement:
The Music for Youth Foundation (MFY) is a non-profit initiative with its mission to identify, fund and lend experience to innovative programs that make quality music education available to underpriveleged young people.
History
In 1995, leading members of the music industry began meeting to discuss the utter collapse of funding for music programs in America’s schools. The group, led by Larry Rosen, founder and past President of MFY, and Elliot Goldman, President Emeritus of MFY, set out to find and support innovative programs that address the need for music in the lives of young people. The Music for Youth Foundation is the results of these efforts, and the proof of its effectiveness lies in the hearts of thousands of kids who have been touched by these programs. To date, MFY has raised over $3 million and has given over $2.2 million in grants to over 40 programs in the past six years. These efforts seemed particularly appropriate since the music industry, which is so supportive of several health related charities had not yet been identified with promoting musical education and scholarship; i.e. “giving back” to the cause of maintaining music education and exposure for the young people of our communities.
From its inception in 1995, an affiliation was struck with the UJA-Federation of New York for them to supply the administrative and support services that would get the Foundation underway and permit most of the funds raised to go towards the Foundations goal of “giving music back.”
