Mulberry Island was originally created to provide select retailers with a refreshingly original collection of handcrafted greeting cards and related handmade paper products created by some of the world's most accomplished artisans. Founded in May 2001 by John Rofheart, a native New Yorker and self-described "Old Asia Hand," and Naruemon Srisawarng, a Thai national living in New York whose years at Chiang Mai University and subsequent graduate work in environmental resource management led to her interest in sustainable development projects like small-scale mulberry paper production, the company has always gone to considerable lengths in pursuit of its goal to become the premier purveyor of fine imported handmade cards.
At the same time a decision was made to introduce from time to time gift items that are not paper-related, the first of which are the handcrafted Mulberry Island Bags. While this may appear to be a departure from our usual line, we were as smitten by them as everyone else and simply couldn't resist adding them to the site. We hope you're glad we did.
As a purveyor of handcrafted products from numerous community-based projects in rural villages where employment opportunities are limited, Mulberry Island offers merchandise that has been fairly purchased and contributes to the sustainable use of natural resources. The organization on the island of Mindanao that makes our Tropicals and Sinapaper Cards, for example, was founded to provide a means of livelihood to women, out-of-school youth, rebel returnees and the disabled; their designers are primarily housewives who work at home; and even the farmers who supply the cogon grass used to make thread earn extra income from something that otherwise has very little monetary value and is an invasive species anyway.
