Description
Mud Ranch is a small ranch of 38 acres owned and operated by Simon and Joan Gross. It is located 40 miles west of Redding, California in a small town of 1200 people called Lewiston. Surrounding Lewiston are the lakes of Whiskeytown, Trinity, and Lewiston. Flowing out of Lewiston Lake is the Trinity River and watching out from above them are the Trinity Alps with their snow crested peaks.
Nestled at the top of the Lewiston Valley, overlooking town is a small herd of Kiger Mustangs, made up of four mares and one young stud. Each spring you can see a few young foals scampering around their pasture with moms in chase. Joan and Simon raise their horses in a natural enviornment with all horses interacting with eachother. The foals are then taught by the herd how to behave and live in the horse world. They are taught that certain behavior is intollerable by their aunties as their moms tolerate sometimes too much. Our stallion roams free with his mare herd whom have taught him quite a few new lessons on how to talk to a lady! He has been put on baby patrol as we see Mattie out soaking in the sun while Sunnie stands guard. Any time that he thinks there is a threat to the herd, he'll round them all up and put them where he thinks is a safe place -- such as, away from an approaching new horse. We enjoy watching the social ways of our herd and learn something new every day.
Our horses are also raised naturally, being fed naturally grown grass hay that includes native grasses and is grown without using pesticides. They are not routinely vaccinated as our belief is that this has been known to start auto-immune problems (although all horses have been vaccinated for west nile virus until the scare is over). All horses are routinely wormed every six to eight weeks. If any new owners choose to have their horses vaccinated, then we are open to accomodating their wishes. We also use natural horsemanship as a way of training, following the lead of many well known horse trainers and taking bits and pieces from each to achieve our goals.
