Description
Mary gained her degree in Horticulture from the respected Wye College, London University, after a year training as a gardener. Her first job after graduating was as supervisor with a large landscaping company in the West Midlands. She admits it was a ‘definitely a man's world then! The company was forward-looking in employing me at the time.’ The work involved implementing large-scale planting schemes, from the new ATV centre in Birmingham, to motorway embankments. There was no room for inaccuracy – it was ‘good training for plant spacings!’
From there, Mary moved Perryhill Nurseries in East Sussex - then, as now, a true plantsman's nursery. In charge of the sales area, Mary’s plant knowledge increased substantially whilst there.
A trained teacher, Mary has also worked in the Education Department at Wakehurst Place, teaching groups of visiting students from pre-school up to A level. She still maintains links with Wakehurst Place, which is administered by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
