MSIG ARMY started in the mid 1980s as a punk rock fanzine in Carbondale, IL and twenty years later was reintroduced as a website. The zine was a local byproduct of the national Do It Yourself movement that featured a variety of anti-authority anti-establishment bands and publications. Current webmaster, and MSIG Army editor Mikey Snot was lead singer of Diet Christ, Carbondale's punk rock mainstay, and also associated with promoting underground shows at the Lost Cross House (for the better part of 20 years, licensed venues for punk bands in Carbondale were limited to short-lived options such as Airwaves, Mainstreet East, and 611 Pizza... bands like the up and coming Nirvana played basement parties at Lost Cross House, House of Voodew, or Club Romex--formerly Cafe Flesh. Even a decidedly non-punk band, R.E.M., had no better option, visiting Carbondale in 1982, to playing for free on a patio outside the Southern Illinois University Student Center).
The letters MSIG provide the baseline for a constantly evolving collection of slogans with the MSIG acronym (such as More Salacious Insipid Gossip, Maybe Someday I'll Go, and My System Is Gone) many of which scroll by on the homepage and reinforce one of the anarchistic slogans promoted by podcasts featured on the website ("MSIG, it's whatever you want it to mean") It is also a joke referring to Mikey Snot's ironic pronouncement that "Mikey Snot Is God."
The site's satirical attacks against Bill O'Reilly, Ann Coulter, and Rush Limbaugh are confessedly base and over the top and so close in form to what they mock, they can fall into the same category of hateful demagoguery as the personalities they target. O'Reilly mentioning "left wing smear sites" said they should go nameless because they want the publicity, and they are beneath contempt seeking to intimidate and drown out opposition.
