Mouth Wide Shut

She’s got her mouth wide shut
And her arms spread in.
She looks sort of strange
In an ordinary kind of way.

Her sister is an only child
Her twin is two years younger.
She looks sort of pretty
In a plain kind of way.

She stares with her eyes shut
And sleeps with them open.
She speaks sort of posh
In a common kind of way.

She cuts her hair long
And sharpens pencils to a blunt.
She talks sort of quickly
In a slow kind of way.

She drinks red apples
And eats lemonade.
She looks sort of happy
In a sad kind of way.

Discussion

This poem was influenced by a discussion of collocations at work and hearing about the death of Stanley Kubrick on the news. The title of the poem takes its name from his film Eyes Wide Shut which was released around the same time.
