On November 6, 1780, the General Assembly of the Independent Republic of Vermont granted Dr. Moses Morse his petition to establish a land grant in the north central part of the state. Governor Thomas Chittenden issued the Town's charter on August 24, 1781. By 1791, there were 10 inhabitants that had moved from New York and Massachusetts and 2 Native American Indians from the St. Regis Tribe.
