John More Established shortly after the second world war in 1947 by John Walter More and his wife. John, previously had a manufacturing jewellery business supplying many of the leading London jewellers. His wife Freda, who had been a china & glassware senior sales and buyer for one of London's leading department stores. Both of them saught a new start after the disruption of the war years. Consequently they started a new retail business in Scarborough specialising in the sale of high quality china glass.
The present retail premises were opened in 1958 shortly after their son Michael had joined the firm. Later, Edith his wife was also to become a partner.
Further expansion took place and a separate furniture manufacturing business was formed. Meanwhile, on the retail side, because of the difficulty of acquiring quality antiques, it became necessary to gradually phase out that side of the business and replace it with a wide range of new but similar products of high quality but at the same time sensibly priced.
