Title

Montevallo Chamber Commerce

Description

Situated in almost the exact center of Alabama, Montevallo offers several worlds of involvement. There’s the attractive University of Montevallo, whose grounds were created by the famous Olmsted brothers who also designed the landscape of New York’s Central Park and the grounds at the Biltmore Estate. The university offers several cultural events during the year. From College Night (public invited), where students perform original musicals and the campus is bedecked in the school’s colors-- purple and gold, to the theater and music department’s regular schedule of shows and performances. If you are a sports enthusiast, baseball, volleyball, tennis, basketball and golf events are also available.

For a fun lesson in history or a step back to the colonial days, there’s The American Village. This citizenship education center and historical park offers hands-on learning as guests participate in the Constitutional Convention, deliver messages from the Sons of Liberty or protest the Stamp Act with other patriots. Visitors will meet Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry and George Washington while walking through the grounds and buildings, several which are designed after other famous colonial structures, such as Mt. Vernon and Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg.

Since Montevallo is a tree city, take a stroll down any of the town’s streets for a glimpse of nature. In Orr Park, a walking trail winds its way through shady glens, a playground and an open meadow. Along the walk, you might come across an alligator, giant beetle, grinning faces, a unicorn and a dragon. But have no fear—these are the creations of resident Tim Tingle. Carved in the decaying side of cedar trees are these lifelike images. Take a stroll and see how many you can find. Who knows, maybe you’ll happen upon the artist himself at work.
