MitchellLibrary.org features historical B&W photographs from Glasgow, Scotland
Title
Virtual Mitchell Homepage
Description
The images are a small selection from various sources, mainly in the City Archives, but also from the History and Glasgow Room of the Mitchell Library and the city's museums. Private owners of images have also kindly lent them for copying. The selected material is of local and historical interest, mostly Glasgow street scenes and buildings, but also scenes of past working lives and of social life in the city. Most of the images are photographs, but a large number of older prints and lithographs of the city from the Glasgow Collection are also to be included, and some modern photographs, particularly of areas which have greatly changed in recent decades.
The images can be searched by street name, by area or by individual words. Certain subjects terms such as 'cinemas' or 'shipbuilding' have been identified as keywords and can be searched separately. Soon we will be inviting members of the public to bring in old photographs of their own, to be added to the project. Users have permission to download individual images, especially for educational purposes, but the on-line images are not of publishable quality. Those wishing to obtain copies of photographic quality can order them separately.
Some problems may occur with streets which have changed their names since the photographs were taken. Cross-references to these name changes will be included at a later stage, along with a set of older maps of the city.
