Description
Mr. G.W. "Bill" Harris, a long-time resident and former Mayor of Mission, saw the need for a facility whereby Mission Residents would be able to leave funds, in perpetuity, for the long term benefit of the community and its citizens.
With other of similar vision, Mr. Harris approached the Dewdney Constituency MLA's Austin Pelton and Norm Jacobsen. They supported Harris' idea and sponsored Bill Pr404. The Mission Foundation was born. During its formative stages, the Mission Kinsmen Club, the Mission Rotary Club, McKnight Johnson and Partners, and the Founders gave financial assistance. The Mission Foundation was legally established by an Act of the BC Legislature on 19 June 1987.
The first funds entrusted to the Mission Foundation came through the estate of the late Margaret Erskine, in the amount of $228, 000. Subsequently, the Foundation benefited from the "friends of Bill" until now, in addition to the General Fund, there are 44 other funds with a total of $1,162,000 under administration. In addition to designated Funds, the Foundation also receives donations "In Memoriam", and responds to ongoing inquiries as to opportunities that might be administered by the Foundation.
