Description
"More than 100 years ago, my grandparents were Appalachian settlers who helped to build Union Church in Rich Patch, Virginia, after the need was felt for a place to worship. When I built my house 15 years ago, I searched for the same quality interior hardwood that they used. There was none. So, I made my own by hand at my sawmill shop. Soon, the demand from others who saw my home and wanted the same solid, simple quality hardwoods became overwhelming. I felt a need to produce interior hardwood products so that others could cherish and enjoy the same quality, beauty and durability of the hardwoods in my own home. One hundred years later, the hardwood interior of Rich Patch Union Church is still beautiful, and my family is still worshiping there today. I feel confident that the interiors produced by Union Church Millworks today will still be beautiful another 100 years from now."
Rich Patch Union Church has been the Bennett family's church since 1890. Its simple hardwood interior sets the mood for spiritual serenity today as it did more than 100 years ago. Searching to find as good a product as his ancestors used--and not being able to find it--spurred Bennett to start making his own interior hardwood by hand. Today, it is available to the public through Bennett's firm, Union Church Millworks.
Steve Bennett's grandmother and great-aunt are pictured here as teen-agers in this 50-60 person congregational picture taken near the turn of the century. The iron ring used for tying up horses can still be seen on the gigantic oak tree today. Bennett's family still worships at Union Church.
