Description

Midwest Bloodhound Rescue, Inc. (MBR) is a not-for-profit organization that helps bloodhounds who have found themselves homeless or in need of a new home. When a bloodhound no longer has a loving home, MBR steps in to help find one.

Absolutely!! Rescue networks around the United States re-home literally tens of thousands of dogs each year. Many of these dogs are bloodhounds. Some of these unfortunate bloodhounds were impulsively purchased as “cute, long-eared puppies” from pet stores or newspapers ads. No one told them their cute “little” puppy would, at 6 months of age, stand approximately 21 inches at the shoulder and weigh over 50 pounds. Others did not realize their growing bloodhound would produce (and generously share) about a quart of drool/slobber a day. Some bloodhounds need new homes due to a family crisis or an owner’s death. Finally, some bloodhounds are picked up by animal control as strays because of owner negligence. These bloodhounds’ owners did not realize that “a loose bloodhound is a gone bloodhound.” When a bloodhound picks up an interesting scent, it will follow it to its conclusion, even if the end of the trail is three counties away from its home!

In most cases, we cannot guaranty that the rescue is a purebred bloodhound as there are no papers with the dog. However, rescues are easily identifiable as bloodhounds. Most of the bloodhounds placed through MBR are teenaged or adult (1+ years of age). Each rescue is an individual case. All rescues undergo a medical examination upon entry to the rescue program. This exam includes: heartworm testing and prevention, vaccinations, general health and spay/neuter, as needed. Some dogs may be placed intact (not spayed or neutered). This is done only in cases where it is in the best interest of the animal not to have this surgery performed prior to adoption. The adoptive home WILL be required to have this surgery done at the appropriate time. MBR attempts to evaluate, to the best of its ability, the temperament of each rescue prior to adoption. It is our goal to determine whether the bloodhound can co-exist with adults, children, dogs, cats and other domestic animals. MBR utilizes all available resources and passes as much information as possible to the new adoptive home. Rescues are placed in volunteer foster homes until they are medically examined, evaluated and adopted. Please note that MBR is NOT a “no-kill” facility. We do euthanize animals. However, this is only done if the animal displays overt aggression or if it is medically in the best interest of the animal.
