Title
Small business loans help the poor help themselves
Description
With life expectancy of only 37 years, Malawi is one of the poorest countries in Africa and indeed the world. Its predominantly rural population is 60% Christian and 40% Muslim, with a small number of people adhering to traditional beliefs.
The population suffers from chronic unemployment and is also being gradually eroded by AIDS. This means that many families are now responsible for one or more orphans in addition to their own children.
A core strategy is to support families which have been affected by AIDS in this way. To date (June 2005) the MicroLoan Foundation has made over 3700 loans in Malawi. The charity does not discriminate in any way between members of different religious groups.
