Welcome to Old Salem -- find yourself in another time and place.

Description

“After traveling through the woods for many days, the sight of this little settlement of Moravians is highly curious and interesting.... The first view of the town is romantic, just as it breaks upon you through the woods; it is pleasantly seated on a rising ground, and is surrounded by beautiful meadows, well-cultivated fields, and shady woods. The antique appearance of the houses, built in the German style, and the trees among which they are placed have a singular and pleasing effect; the whole resembles a beautiful village, and forms a pastoral scene.”

Old Salem is a restoration of the Moravian community called Salem that was started in 1766. Renowned for its high level of authenticity, the non-profit organization named Old Salem began its work in earnest in 1950.

The Moravians are a Protestant faith that began in the 1400s in the province of Moravia, now part of the Czech Republic. From a later community established in Herrnhut, Germany, the Moravians went throughout the world as missionaries and to found settlements. From an earlier settlement in Bethlehem, Pa., they came to the colony of North Carolina in 1753.
