- Ladybird ‘pocket-sized’ books used to be lovely matt-covered little hardback books with detailed, real-looking illustrations by well-known artists and simple sans serif font. Most of them now have fussy, glossy covers and, compared with the old books, have been trivialised. There are enough cartoony books around with sub-standard illustrations such as the silly mice holding umbrellas while fleeing the lumpy onslaught of The Magic Porridge Pot; I know things move on in sixty years, and I know my little boy points at the mice and bunnies and squeaks, but why couldn’t Ladybird stay at least slightly as they were: a) not dumbed-down and b) a design classic?
