Akanishta Buddhist Center was founded in 1999 by the request of Geshe Kelsang Gyatso as a non-profit organization and member of the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT). Geshe Kelsang is one of the most widely respected Buddhist masters living in the west today. He was born in Tibet and from a very early age studied extensively in the great monastic universities. After receiving his Geshe degree, he spent the next 18 years in retreat in the Himalayas.
