- Mattress World Inc. sold its first mattress on January 18, 1996. I would have loved to have saved our first dollar and framed it on the wall but, I could not afford to do it. To make a long story short, I was crazy enough to open 5 stores at once with only enough money to get us thru the first week. We lost so much money month after month that words cannot even describe the determination it took to make it work. My mission has never changed.
