Description
Matt O'Brien's photography has been exhibited internationally and is in private and public collections, including the Library of Congress and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. His work has been published widely including in Camera Arts, Camerawork, Jane, Land and People, American Cowboy, and The San Francisco Chronicle Magazine (View the Article). He has received numerous awards, including a Mother Jones International Fund for Documentary Photography Award, a Community Heritage Grant from the California Council for the Humanities, an International Artist Award from the U.S. State Department, an Art in Conservation Award from the California Coastal Conservancy, and grant awards from the Lef Foundation and the Skaggs Foundation.
Back to the Ranch, his celebrated study of ranching and urbanization in northern California's East Bay area, has been exhibted widely, including at the California Museum of Photography. In conjunction with the exhibition, the Museum created a website which can be viewed at www.cmp.ucr.edu/photography/ranch. In 2000, the Alameda County Arts Commission commissioned Matt to create a photographic portrait of Alameda County now on permanent display in the County's Highland Hospital.
In 2004 Matt was invited to exhibit Royal Colombia, his exploration of Colombia through beauty contests, at the Museum of Modern Art in Cartagena and at the Centro Colombo Americano in Medellin, Colombia. The U.S. Embassy supported the exhibitions. In 2005 the work will be exhibited in Bogota. (View Gallery)
