Description
Dr. Sayers has researched marital and family issues for over 15 years. With Dr. Chuck Burnett, in 1988 Dr. Sayers published the PMI Handbook, a guide for clergy and laypersons counseling engaged couples who are using the PMI Profile inventory. Dr. Sayers has also published articles regarding the prevention of marital discord, spouses' explanations of marital problems, the effectiveness of marital therapy (with Dr. Don Baucom), masculinity, femininity and their relation to marriage. His professional and community presentations have focused on marital conflict, depression, and marital violence. Dr. Sayers has published studies with Dr. Alan Bellack on research of family conflict and the course of schizophrenia.
Dr. Sayers has been awarded grants from the National Institute of Mental Health in the area of marital conflict and depression (as Principal Investigator), and family conflict and the course of schizophrenia (as Co-Principal Investigator, Dr. Alan Bellack). From 1994-1996, he was Co-President of the Marital Research and Therapy Special Interest Group of the Association for Advancement of Behavior Therapy.
Dr. Sayers is Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Clinical and Health Psychology at the Medical College Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University, and is Assistant Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, both in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is Senior Research Coordinator for the Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC), at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center.
