Markfield Local History Group was formed with the aim of writing a book to provide a permanent record of village history and heritage. In the past much has been researched, but so far, little has been recorded. In 1997 Christine Gannon, Clerk to Markfield Parish Council suggested that the Millenium would provide a golden opportunity to record information contained in sources such as census returns, directories, villagers' reminiscences, written papers, reference books and photographs. The book is not only a memorial to past generations of villagers who have lived and worked in Markfield but also a testimony to those who support our village life today as we move into the next millennium.
"Markfield into the Millennium" was launched at an exhibition in December 1999. Copies were soon sold out and the Group was more than satisfied with their results. It was agreed to give £1000 from the profits to the computer project at Mercenfeld Primary School. A touch screen computer was presented at school assembly on 17th May 2000.
