Description
Machias is a small rural farming community, population, 2000, located in Western New York, 50 miles south of Buffalo. The township encompasses 25,890 rolling acres in Cattaraugus County, at the foothills of the Allegany Mountains.
Machias was settled in 1807 by Major Timothy Butler, who brought his family here from Machias, Maine; hence, the name. (The name Machias means dirty water!) Machias is dotted with numerous dairy farms, many of which are the original homesteads dating back to 1817. The first barn was built in 1821, the first log house in1820, and the first mail was carried on horseback by Isaac Carpenter in 1827,. The original veterinary clinic was established in Machias in 1910.
Machias now has two stores, two gas stations, several churches and a post office. And, of course, the Machias Veterinary Clinic! As you can see, things haven't changed a whole lot, and that's just the way we like it!
