Description

The Latvian Council of Science (LCS) was founded in accordance with the decision of the Council of Ministers, Republic of Latvia, in July, 1990. In accordance with the Law on Scientific Activity, the Latvian Council of Science is a collegiate institution of the scientists with the rights of a legal entity. The above Law determines the competence, obligations, membership and rights of the Latvian Council of Science. The Council's tasks include advancement, evaluation, financing and coordination of scientific research in Latvia. It prepares jointly with the Ministry of Education and Research of Latvia the draft of the Republic’s science budget for the next current year, elaborates projects for decisions and laws aimed at development and organization of science in Latvia.

Currently the basic structure of the Latvian Council of Science involves fourteen expert commissions including 139 members in the following branches of science:

Each commission consists of 5—19 scientists. They carry out examination of the research projects. The members of the branch expert commissions elect 33 members for five Joint expert commissions:
