On a warm September afternoon in 1981, an audience gathered at Symphony Hall in Allentown to hear something new. What they heard and what they experienced was the beginning of the first season of the Lehigh Valley Chamber Orchestra.What began as a modest dream in the minds of a few dedicated musicians has grown to become, by any measure, the premier classical music ensemble in our region.
As we begin our 26th season, we look back with pride at a history of more than 460 performances, 145 guest artists, three recordings, 31 commissioned works, and an ever-growing and always loyal audience. We have truly earned our position in the world of Lehigh Valley performing arts.
LVCO is known for our spirited performances of great music, both from the traditional repertoire as well as works from contemporary composers. Each year, we commission and perform an original piece by an American composer, providing an opportunity for the development of contemporary composers and the enrichment of the contemporary repertoire. Both the Allentown Arts Commission and the City of Bethlehem have recognized LVCO for our outstanding achievements in the performing arts and for our contributions to the cultural life of the area.
