Description
The following information is an interesting period piece that highlights the heritage and background of one of the icon golf club's of Victoria and intrinsically, the Bellarine Peninsula.
In 1921, residents in Point Lonsdale met under the leadership of Mr. A.M. Nicholas (founder of the Aspro company) to purchase 43 acres of land that extended from Boundary Road (now Fellows Road) to Lake Victoria from a Mr. Thompson for the sum of 1000 pounds.
In 1929 the subscriptions were 1 guinea for men and 10 shillings & sixpence for women with green fees set at 2 shillings per day or 5 shillings per week. A further 52 acres were purchased in 1937 for 650 pounds and the membership was 90 in number. The naval and military installation at Queenscliff helped increase the membership to 178 in 1940 which allowed the first fairway mower to be purchased for 67 pounds.
