American Birling Association - Lumberjack Water Sports

Description

Welcome to the home of the American Birling Association. The American Birling Association was formed to promote the sports of log rolling and boom running. We are working at providing everything from how-to articles on log rolling, boom running, making log rolling spikes, carpeting logs, even organizing your own log rolling or boom running contest. All our information is free, so take a look around and examine our wonderful sports.

ESPN's Great Outdoor Games, quite possibly the most publicized contest in the world, has been moved from Madison, Wisconsin, to Orlando, Florida for 2005. Many of the world's most-talented outdoors athletes will converge on central Florida and Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex to compete this summer in the ESPN Great Outdoor Games presented by Dodge. The full story is here.

It has come to the attention of the American Birling Association that a number of individuals are pushing for Professional Rollers to switch to carpeted logs in competition. They have stated one such reason as financial concerns. Just to inform people of what is spent by the choppers and sawyers to compete, I have talked to people that have spent in upwards of $10,000 for equipment. That makes a couple hundred dollars spent on log rolling spikes and n occasional log seem pretty minimal. Not only does pushing for carpted logs threaten the integrity and well being of the sport, but also degrades the sport. Rolling on regular logs requires a greater amount of skill, and athleticism than is required by carpeted logs. The goal of the American Birling Association is to make the sport bigger and better, not degrade sport. Some have been saying there is "overwhelming support" from the log rolling community to switch to carpeted logs. We can inform you that this is definitely NOT the case. We have spoken with many people within the sport, including many of the top competitors, and none of the had heard anything about moving to carpeted logs, nor had they voiced their opinion in favor of it. The American Birling Association does not support the move to carpeted professional logs, as it threatens the sport of log rolling's integrity and future. With a sport as diminishing as ours, the last thing we need is to put another nail the sport of log rolling's coffin.
