Topsail Island is located 5 miles east of Highway 17 via NC highways 210 and 50. Access is by a swing bridge on NC 50 at Surf City, or a beautiful new high-span bridge on NC 210 near the northern end of the island. On the East lay the 26 miles of white sandy beaches that gently slope into the great Atlantic Ocean where underlying reefs furnish feeding beds for the large schools of fish prized by sport fisherman and professional

fisheries alike. To the West, Topsail Island sprawls into areas of wooded land extending into the sounds and channels of the oceans backwater. The island is bordered on the North by the New River Inlet and on the South by Topsail Inlet. Through the area backwaters between these two borders is channeled the Intracoastal Waterway.

As early as the 1700s, the island was known as Topsail Island. The name Topsail (pronounced Topsul) is alleged to have originated during the days of piracy on the open seas.
