Logan Square Cooperative is an 8-unit building at 3934-3946 W. George St. Chicago IL 60618 near Diversey/Pulaski intersection.
Although technically located in Avondale neighborhood, many of its founding members have lived in the Logan Square neighborhood for some time, thus the name of our co-op. A group of us came together over 5 years ago to establish a new co-op that reflected our social justice values as well. It took quite a bit of hunting and some luck with our two non-profit funders, but we did close the deal and moved in around August of 2001.
Of the eight units, five are one-bedroom units, one is a studio, one is a two-bedroom unit, and one is a converted three-bedroom unit. We've done extensive re-hab on the building, including all-new electrical, a 2nd layer on the roof, and this summer new porches and a solar hot water array. All units are currently filled, but we maintain a waiting list for interested parties. We are a limited-equity co-op, which basically means that we cap a member's equity appreciation to keep the units affordable over time. We usually host an open house once a year in the summer.
Our efforts were supported in great part by the now defunct Chicago Mutual Housing Network, the Chicago Community Loan Fund, and the National Cooperative Development Fund out of Minneapolis. Thanks also to members of the Stone Soup Cooperative who gave us a lot of help early on when we were just forming.
We don't currently maintain a website, so are glad to see this resource being made available for the greater good of the Chicago co-op community.
