Loel History
LOEL was founded in 1943 and has been the first winery in Cyprus in the form of an organized public company with thousands of shareholders who, in their great majority, are vine growers. At the initial stages distilled products and fortified wines were introduced as the constitute the best that could be produced from the Cyprus indigenous grape varieties like Mavra, Xynisteri and especially Muscat of Alexandria, from which the best known Cyprus wine, the LOEL Muscat has been created. By the lapse of the years the Ministry of Agriculture, in order to upgrade the qualities of Cyprus wines, decided to encourage re-cultivation with imported noble vine varieties like Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Palomino etc. internationally accepted to produce the best wine grapes in the world, so that Cyprus would rank amongst the countries able to present the finest wines in the world. This policy was adopted with enthusiasm by LOEL who created the first experimental vineyards of these varieties.
Loel Today
Today LOEL owns seventy acres of vineyards in Limassol and Paphos district, owns two country wineries apart from the main winery in Limassol and has signed an agreement with vine growers to buy from them the best grape varieties aiming the production of high quality wines. With the application of control fermentation technique has produced and introduced in the Cyprus market wines which could be compare to similar wines from Europe, like Palomino, Anthea and Chardonnay for whites and Orpheo Negro, Nectaria, Cabernet sauvignon old and Mediterranean Cabernet for reds. Everybody now in Cyprus acknowledges the superiority of LOEL in Cabernet wines.
Well, it is obvious, the imported noble grape varieties made the difference reiterating once again that "the choice grape makes the choice wine"! With these wines we also enriched Amathus white and Hermes red blending them with the Cyprus varieties. In the same manner, we have improved, up to the level of international challenge, our brandies Master's, Vsop, Vo 43, the traditional Zivania, and plenty of other types of schnapps, all in our distilleries. It would be useful to mention that our factories are fully equipped, for the collection and vinification of 30 million kilos of fresh grapes every year. Since 1988 we have installed two Tetra Pak packing lines and have been the first ones in the Eastern Mediterranean to present table wines and sangria under the trade name Vinotheque, alongside with fruit juices in Tetra Briks, with the well known advantages. Bulk wines, grape concentrates and grape alcohol have always been available, but since lately with the spectacular success of LOEL Muscat, Cabernet Sauvignon and Palomino, we have proved that: the best wines in the world are also produced in LOEL-Cyprus.
