Dr. Lloyd Hey grew up in Oyster Bay, New York. As a teenager, Dr. Hey was "Mr. Fix It." He understood how to take things apart and put them back together, largely thanks to the inspiration and teaching of his father, Albert Hey.
Compassion through Experience
Dr. Hey's commitment to healing stems from a severe automobile/moped injury he suffered at age 16, which almost claimed his left leg and his life. He was hospitalized for more than three months at Glen Cove Hospital, in Glen Cove, New York under the care of orthopaedic surgeons Drs. Mark Pitman and Charles Pitman. He endured 11 surgeries, countless outpatient clinic visits, painful therapy and dressing changes during his recovery.
To hold the bones rigid, the doctors attached pins to Dr. Hey's bones that were held in place by a metal frame called a Hoffman External Fixator. But the injury was so severe that the original fixator could not hold the bones rigid, which was quite painful and delayed the healing.
