Better Guidelines
How to add a site
- How do I add a new website to AboutUs? I looked up eHarbor, looking for eHarbor Inc., but I only found eHarbor.org. I would like to add eharborinc.com to your database and then add content to that page on your site.
How to add remove
- How do I add and remove a site from the list?
- Add - go to the website page (domain page) and add the topic tag(s) that you are using in your list
- Remove - click on the edit pencil icon and remove the topic tag(s) associated with the list you are working on
How to find a list
- I just found it a little confusing as to where to find the list that I want to work on.
- In the Find! bar above (on every page) add the topic keyword(s) that you are interested in looking at, it is best to try different topic keyword(s) to narrow the list down.
Topic Tags
Add multiple topic tag
- As a community editor I would really like the ability to bulk add keywords.. I propose this would be done using the current topic addition form... but by adjusting the code to allow "," separated values when submitted by a sysop.
- We are considering this!
Clear all topics
- Clear All Topics - You've probably already thought of this however I think it would be a huge time saver if there was a "Clear Topics" link where the "Add topic" and "Show all topics" are. I'm finding a lot of sites with a massive amount of un-needed topics and It would be easy if we could clear them all so I can write a new lot of topics.
- We are considering this!
Rearrange tags
- The ability to rearrange tags / topics It could be good if we had the ability to drag and drop tags around the list.... Or if that's to hard, some other form of rearrangement. The reason I ask for that is, I want to show the best descriptive topics first (before the others are hidden)
- We are considering this!
Tag cloud and topics
- Ok, I noticed you have that "the wiki way" tag cloud on the front page and I had this idea. When you search a topic and it has that "Get more specific", the topics in that "get more specific" list could be in a tag cloud. So the more popular topics are enlarged and the less popular smaller. I think this would be great for users to find the topic they want more easier.
- Good idea, this one is going to take a lot more discussion on our part
Tag editing
- If you are going to offer a tagging system, consider copying from the best and 'borrow' features from Delicious https:*//secure.delicious.com/settings
- ability to (bulk) rename or delete tags
- ability to show an AURA list for an arbitrary combination of tags, not just a single tag
- This already exists. You may have any number of topics for an AURA lists. See:* AURA:*Portland/Tech as opposed to AURA:*Portland Tech for example.
- Thank you, that is exactly what I meant! e.g.
- http:*//www.aboutus.org/best-sites/django/weblog
- for weblogs about django.
- I think I was just thrown because delicious uses a plus character for this, so the equivalent page with a list of things tagged both 'django' and 'weblog' is:*
- http:*//delicious.com/tag/django+weblog
- This already exists. You may have any number of topics for an AURA lists. See:* AURA:*Portland/Tech as opposed to AURA:*Portland Tech for example.
Summaries
Summary too short
- Can there ever be a way to use more than 63 characters? Some things I just cannot do justice to. I lose the real essence. But overall good exercise in brevity.
- We are committed to brevity as we think it is a value to be able to describe a website with a short sentence
What to do next?
- If you have any suggestions as to what I can do to improve the list. At this point I have some sites to add, but they need to be added to AboutUs first.
- What we have been discussing as a solid list is:*
- top 30 all belong on the list and have summaries
- nothing glaring missing from top 30 (search google and social media or ask an authority on the topic)
- has summary, title (coming soon)
- good domain pages for top 10 (somewhere between initial page creation and SpotlightUs page, basically a light treatment)
- What we have been discussing as a solid list is:*
AURA Lists
Approved already
- Indicator for approved sites for list keepers. Is there a way for list keepers to have an indicator for sites they have already approved on their list. A flag or an asterisk or something. Since the order changes, sometimes it's difficult to determine which ones have already been viewed.
- We are considering this.
List length
- Is there a way around the twenty at a time list show? It's cumbersome to always have to click twenty more and twenty more, etc, especially when I hit the back button and it takes me back to the top of the list all over again.
- Give me a way to show all or at least 100 at a time - I hate clicking through at 20 at a time when there are hundreds to scan through.
- This is a priority - not sure when it will be implemented
Plurals
- Started out editing bird. Then switched to birds. Now working diligently on elephants. In between edited both inukshuk and inukshuks lists. Also for zero balancing which is a bodywork therapy that follows energy meridians.
- What's the benefit of both plural and singular subjects for lists, eg, elephant vs. elephants or bird vs. birds? Would it be useful to combine these somehow or no?
- Also where are the indices? Would be good to get cracking on those.
- Huge internal discussions about both of these items, nothing to report about a consensus yet
Sorting
- Having options to sort the AURA list differently.
- Alphabetically Z-A
- We are discussing this one
- Date Added
- Probably not this one
- Date Updated - The date functionality would be good, OK.. maybe not the date added! but the date updated would allow you to search something like "blackberry" with the date updated selected and AboutUs could tell you what is the most up-to-date site! (good for news sites / blogs)
- We are discussing this one
- Category (i.e. Blog Website, News Website, General Website)
- We are discussing this one
- Alphabetically Z-A
Rating
- Do you have any guidelines about how to rate the websites? I think it would make AboutUs of even more value if there is consistency and integrity to this process. Something simple, like scoring (positive or negative) for web appearance, spam ad pop-ups, ease of use, organization, value/benefits (does this site provide anything special or better than others of its kind?), pricing , etc.
- Actually I think a better system might be having a thumbs up/thumps down. So next to the "visit" button you could have a little thumps up and down icon. If the user likes the site they can give it a thumps up and so on... Then on the main page for that domain it could show how many thumps up & down's there have been.
- Result Sorting - On many sites that have the ability to search they normally have "Sort by:* Name, Date etc..." It may be helpful for users to have the ability to sort by name, popularity and if you put the rating/thumbs system in I mentioned before, you can sort by that.
- AboutUs actually started out with a rating system - but moved away from it within the first 6 months - we are considering a rating system again.
Flagging
How to flag sites
like parking lots / adult / malware
- What do I do about things like pages which are just ad landing pages?
- We are planning to have two things around this suggestion, first to have better identification of these types of sites from the get go, secondly to have an automated way to flag them (currently they can be manual {{ParkingLot}} tagged
- To list or not to list? Going through my list, sites I've come across are a problem... There are quite a number of dead sites, malware sites and sites distributing illegal materials.
- It would be good to remove these from the list and tag them appropriately
Duplicates sites
- Some sites go to a different site.
- In this case, we want to mirror the internet so we clear the page and add #redirect [[ActualWebsite.com]] to it
Duplicates - multiple
- Some sites have more than one URL pointing to the same page. This artificially increases number of sites in a list. What's the best way to show that all URLs point to the same page and thus end duplication?
- We want to help readers understand the internet, so on pages that are virtually the same, improving the main wiki page about the domain is good and on all the others, putting something to the effect of This is the same as WebsiteThatIsBeingMirrored.com - for the reader to clearly understand what is happening
Feature requests
- Feed Me! Allow the addition of RSS & other feeds (i.e. twitter, .etc) to pages... This would encourage people to use AboutUs even more... as they will be able to get a full website summery on one page.
- We are considering this, and if we do move forward on it, that will happen in the next few quarters
Search options
- How do we now search for non domain pages? Firstly I'd like to say that I like the new search function.. But there are a few problems with it.. The main one being you now can't find any non domain pages (i.e. user pages or help pages).
- Maybe this could be solved by having an advance search button? Something that would ether use the old Google search functionality or maybe by allowing all wiki pages the option of tags an titles making it possible to use the new search functionality... allowing the user to search for User Pages, Official AboutUs Help Pages or other non domain pages.
- Good idea, this is a known problem - trying to figure out how to solve it.
Site design suggestions
- I believe the whole site should be centered. I noticed some of the main pages are left aligned but the search is centered. The site looks a lot better centered.
- Good idea and we are working on a possible solution
- I'm attempting to switch to a different OpenID identity, but I can't seem to find a way to update this on my profile page.]]
- Currently we have disabled OpenID
- Your website footer links are to dark, Brighten them up, Users with a low contrast screen will not see them.
- This was a bug that we fixed when we discovered (through this comment)
- one page says it all - many pages on the web are limited to only a few tidbits of information my idea is to have set columns on one page such as name, location, directions, purpose of website, and any hard to find pages such as approval numbers slot for an already approved credit card.
- We are intending to move to a limited version of this in the next few months
SEO suggestion
- Better Meta Tags - I think AboutUs should use grater use of the meta tags for even better SEO! i.e. The title tags are currently formatted like this:*
- AboutUs Wiki Page But as the title is one of the most valued things in SEO, why don't you use the CamelCase functionality to add to it.. For instance:* Ultimate-Competitions.com - Ultimate Competitions - AboutUs Wiki Page or:* AwardWinningWebDesign.com - Award Winning Web Design - AboutUs Wiki Page or for static pages:* Category:*AboutUsBotGoneBad - Category About Us Bot Gone Bad - AboutUs Wiki Page - This small change would allow for the AboutUs wiki page show up for not only searches for the domain name but also the words within the URL. I was also thinking that the new website summery could be used to create a dynamic description tag... with maybe a standard bit added at the end i.e. Ultimate-Competitions.com is coming soon. See what other information we have and share your knowledge. And then the topic tags could be easily be created into keywords... and yes I know google and most other search engines tend to ignore them... but it cant hurt if all pages on AboutUs.org has different keywords!
- Good idea, we are discussing this
Bugs
- Possible bug with adding topics... Not sure if this is a bug or it's ment to be that way. But when you delete a topic the "add topic" disappears and you must close the edit and re-open the edit to get it to appear again.
- AboutUs.com duplicated some of the content when I edited a website review. The site was Medicare-PartD.com and the thumbnail screen shot, the title, and other text fields were duplicated within the same AboutUs.com page. Is it possible to edit-out the duplicated fields? Thanks!
- Search doesn't find website http:*//ideamappingsuccess.com/ - http:*//www. should be stripped out of all searches.
- We are looking at all bugs and trying to solve them, thanks for reporting them.
Adult filter too sensitive
- Adult filter on summaries far too sensitive
Adult filter on adding summaries is far too sensitive. I recommend removing it all together or substantially culling the list of words that trip it.
- We have a path to making this less of a problem
Feedback from our request
- Can't any user do this anyway? Or is this something different?
- Currently there are many things the same, our goal is to continue to give List Keepers more and more features.
Categories
- Categories look a lot like topics.
- Yes, topics were pulled from categories. They will be phased out
Languages
- Now as everyone knows there are many sites on AU that are in different languages. My question is, some sites have topics that are written in other languages. Should I leave them there as I have no idea what they say?
- I've currently just been leaving them there as someone that knows that language may edit the tags. But I just wanted to know your thoughts on this?
- There are two thoughts on this, one, if you leave them, it is an invitation to a future person who speaks that language to decide about them. The other thought is since you are doing the work of making the list great, you can decide you are doing it in your language and remove them.
Topic-less Sites
Is there a page that lists all the sites that do not have topics? I couldn't see any in special pages.
New feedback
Those points all seem good to me. I assume these are meant to be list-keeper responsibilities.
A couple of my thoughts on those. I don't know how the rankings on the list are determined, but I'm assuming that they change all the time. If the list-keeper does a "light treatment" on a domain page that is in the top ten, then the site drops out of the top ten we'll be editing domain pages frequently.
Also, concerning point #2, if a site ranks high on Google does that mean that it will be in the top 30 if we add it to the list?
I hope these comments make sense. I'm trying to understand your objectives as well as I can. The list I'm editing are related to a couple site/projects that I work on. I may reference and link to my list from there. I will let you know if I do.
