Title

Linux Headquarters

Description

The purpose of Linux Headquarters is to provide information about Linux to users of all skill levels, particularly those who are migrating to Linux from other operating systems. Also, we seek to make the public aware how Linux can be used in a variety of roles such as a network server, a software development platform, and as a desktop operating system. For example, many Windows users are unaware that the applications that they rely on such as word processors, instant messaging programs, MP3 players, email clients, and web browsers are all available on Linux. Once people realize that they are not dependent on Windows for their applications, they are more likely to switch to Linux.

There are many people who are willing to give Linux a try, but once they manage to get it installed, they shrug their shoulders and say, "I've installed Linux...now what???" Frustration over basic things like configuring the modem is enough to cause some users to go back to Windows. To compound the problem, many of the man pages and how-tos on the web are hard to follow and/or outdated. Based on our experience, the initial learning curve for Linux is steeper than other operating systems for people without a UNIX background. Anything that the Open Source community can do to reduce the learning curve will speed the acceptance of Linux in both the corporate and consumer markets. That's where we come in. We want to contribute what we can to the Open Source community that has provided us and the rest of the world an alternative to closed, proprietary software. Our goal is to document as many aspects of Linux as possible in a clear and easy to follow manner.

All our guides and tutorials represent our original work. We've put a lot of time into this, so please don't steal from us. Feel free to suggest topics that you'd like to see discussed and we'll consider writing a guide for it. Take a look at the Guides and Tutorials section and let us know what you think.
