Description
Leon Azoulay was born in Morocco in 1945. After emigrating to Israel, he settled in Tsfat (Safed) and studied graphics and fine art. Azoulay became interested in Bible art early in his career. Living in the ancient town of Tsfat, birthplace of Jewish mysticism (the Kabbalah), inspired him in his search for a means of expressing his passion for painting and for the Bible. His art is a unique fusion of the two -- Azoulay's paintings depict scenes from the Old Testament blended with Biblical passages written in minute letters (micro calligraphy). His rendition of the Story Of Creation, for example, is composed of the entire book of Genesis in micro calligraphy, in a way that actually constructs the painting of the scene. Leon Azoulay has exhibited his work extensively. He has permanent exhibition of his paintings at his gallery in the Old City of Tsfat. He held one-man shows in Lille, France in 1990, in Montreal, canada, in 1993 and Boca Raton, Florida in 1995. In addition, he participate in numerous group shows, such as Northbrook, Illinois in 1992, 1993 and 1994, in Nanuet N.Y. in 1993, in Jerusalem, Israel in 1994, in New York in 1995, in Cleveland, Ohio in 1996 and 1997, in Miami Beach, Florida, in 1998 and in Toronto, Canada in 1998.
