Description
The first settlement of Indian Territory occurred via the Land Run of 1888. After several land runs it was determined that it would be better to apportion land through the use of a lottery. Names of potential settlers were placed into bins. In another bin, land descriptions were placed. A settler's name and a land description were drawn. The U.S. Government then issued a title (a land Patent) to that parcel in the settler's name.
In the early 1900s, a drawing held in El Reno distributed the land in the area that would become Hinton, Oklahoma.
One of the settlers in this new territory was an enterprising young man from Kansas named Harrison Miller. In the winter of 1902, Mr. Miller opened Hinton's first bank, Hinton State Bank.
