- I come from a rich heritage of needle-working women. The most prominent in influencing my career path was my maternal grandmother, known as “Nanny” to all her grandchildren. When I was about six years old, I used to stand beside her and watch her make quilts out of worn out old coats and dresses on her treadle sewing machine. She would describe things as she went along, and I would ask what she meant. I carefully scrutinized every move, taking it all in, not knowing that one day I would follow in her footsteps. Even at that young age I used to draw pictures of women in fancy clothes. I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up – “a Fashion Designer” I used to say.
