Put out the welcome mat for new visitors

Perhaps you've seen some great examples of Facebook landing pages that companies create for their first-time visitors. Now you want to create a Facebook landing page for your company to entice newcomers to "like" you, sign up for your email newsletters or visit your website to learn more.
Here are step-by-step instructions, along with a snapshot of my company's landing page and the code I created for it. You can use that code as a template to create your own Facebook landing page.

Creating Your Facebook Landing Page

1. Download Static FBML

FBML stands for Facebook Markup Language, and it allows you to build Facebook applications. In this case, you will download FBML in order to create a customizable tab on your company’s page. You can later set this tab to display as the default for new visitors. The tab will be displayed alongside the standard tabs on your page (Wall, Info, Photos, etc.).

Log into Facebook and search for the Static FBML application. (You can also simply click on the link.) Click “Add to my Page,” then confirm which business page you want to add it to. See image below.


2. Confirm Settings

Now go back to your company’s Facebook page. Below your profile picture, click “Edit Page.” If you made an early switch to Facebook’s new business pages, “Edit Page” will be located on the upper right hand side of your page.

Navigate to your list of “Apps” and find the newly added FBML app. Click “Edit Settings.”


Make sure the Tab is “Added” in your Settings and click Okay.


3. Add Your Content

Now comes the exciting part. Navigate back to your list of “Apps” and click “Go to App” under FBML. You should see two empty text fields pop up, “Box Title” and “FBML”:


You’ll delete “FBML” from the “Box Title” field and enter an appropriate title for your landing page, one that reflects how you will use your landing page to turn new visitors into fans. Get creative! You may want to name it “Welcome,” or perhaps “Special Deals.” You can always go back and rename your tab, but you should certainly replace “FBML” with something more meaningful.

The “FBML” box is where you will enter standard HTML code to display the content for your new landing page. You may include images, text, links, and any other formatting you desire. (Images must be hosted somewhere else, such as your website or blog). Note that you do not need to include , , or tags.

Here’s an example of HTML code used on Pegasus Lighting’s Facebook page, with a screenshot of the finished result. It’s a simple landing page, but it does the job of communicating what visitors will find on the company’s page and what other resources are available. Feel free to use this HTML code as a template to create your own landing page - just replace the images and text content. (Click the image on the left to see the code larger, and in text you can copy.)



The best thing about the FBML app is that it can always be changed. If you are running a special promotion, product giveaway or contest, you can tweak the content on your landing page to advertise your special event to new visitors. Once your promotion is over, you can change your landing page back to the original design.

You may want to test out different landing page designs, messages or promotions to see which persuade the most visitors to become fans of your company.

One more thing to consider before you move on: In addition to HTML, you can also use FBML (Facebook Markup Language) tags to customize this tab as your landing page. The example above does not use FBML – I chose to use HTML to keep it simple for this article. Feel free to read up on FBML and use it, especially if you’re already familiar with HTML. This article should help get you started.

4. Set Your New Tab as the Landing Page

This final step turns your new tab into your company’s landing page. Go back to your company’s and click “Edit Settings.” Then navigate to “Manage Permissions.”


In the “Default Landing Tab” drop-down menu, select your new tab. Though you see it in the above image as “FBML,” you’ll see it listed with the new title you gave the tab in Step 3.

Now that you’ve got your new landing page, pay attention to results! Consider trying out different designs, promotions or messages to see which one gets you the most new fans on Facebook. You can also test which landing page drives the most people to sign up for your emails, follow your blog, or buy something from your website.
