Laura Smith's music is like falling in love. Emotion ebbs and flows. Blood pumps quick then slow. All you know is that your heart is in her hands, and likewise, she has entrusted you with hers. As she sings, her strong, melodious voice catches, snagging on a scar here and there, and inside you feel it too - forgotten memories of joy and pain shoot bravely to the surface, and your body and mind awaken.
Laura's new recording, it's a personal thing, plumbs a deep well of emotion. Spun from moonlit nights and cool, crashing waves, Smith's music is direct and honest. Fiddles and guitars gently lift and carry her spirited vocals, while her melodies and careful poetry dig deep. "My work is all very simple, earth-based," says the Maritime based singer/songwriter. Her work is not so much written, as painstakingly designed, cut and stitched together. "Like quilt craft," she explains. " I make it body and soul, with everything I have available - my sensibilities, my ability to play. So many things come into the making of a song. When I say write, it limits what I bring to bear."
Recorded in a sun swept Hubbards, Nova Scotia house overlooking the ocean, the album was produced by Smith and David Hillier. "I wanted light and a view so I could see the ocean," explains Smith of the recording space. The sparse, wood-lined bungalow featured a cathedral ceiling for vocal acoustics, and once she filled it with flowers, it was the perfect spot to spin her musical creations.
