- Laser Kare was started in 1988 in the basement of a house on an environmental mission. The mission was to find a way to recycle these cartridges so that our landfills would not overflow with nondegradable plastic. It is estimated that in 1995 (in North America alone) 55 million toner cartridges were purchased and less than 30% were recycled. That translates into about 38.5 million toner cartridges, almost 77,000 tons or 19.2 million cubic feet of waste put in landfills across the country.
