Lake Union Crew Rowing Club, Seattle, WA - Home
Description
In 1993, Rome Ventura helped to established crew as a varsity sport at Holy Names Academy, her high school alma mater. This fledging group initially rowed out of the George Pocock Rowing Center, as did Moonstruck, the masters rowing group Rome founded. Before long the growing clubs soon needed more space than was available at Pocock. Rome's desire to create a rowing community for people of all ages and skill levels inspired her to consider building a new club.
Construction of the Inspiration and the Unity, the two floating vessels that house Lake Union Crew, began in 1997. Upon completion, the Inspiration and Unity traveled up Lake Union to their permanent home at 11 E. Allison Street, and on February 1, 1998, Lake Union Crew was officially open for business.
Since then, Moonstruck has become part of Lake Union Crew, Holy Names Academy's crew program has grown to 90 athletes, and Lake Union Crew, home to over 300 athletes, has become one of the premier rowing clubs in the United States.
