The Laird Hotel is has been operating as an exclusively gay venue for over twenty years, one of the longest consistent operating records anywhere in the world. It is open seven nights a week and combines an industrial look with a cruising atmosphere, open fire places and beer garden. It is the only hotel in Victoria to have been granted "Male Only" status by the Australian legal system in deference to its history and service to the gay community. It caters to a wide range of men, and is a great place to meet up with locals and visitors from around the world.
There are three bars. Nuggets Bar (pictured above) which maintains its friendly atmosphere seven days a week. Nuggets is famous for being a place where nobody remains a stranger for long. Nuggets opens every day at 5pm and remains open till 1am Sunday to Thursday, and 3am on Fridays and Saturdays. The Back Bar opens at 9:30pm every Friday and Saturday night, and on other nights for special events (see What's On). The atmosphere of the back bar can range from the Leather of Thursday night's 'Spit and Polish', through the social Friday and Saturday, to the special feel of the monthly underwear parties.
The third bar opens in May 2002 and will provide service directly to the beer garden. It will make the beer garden even more popular as place to sit and talk with old or new friends.
