About Lahey Clinic

When Frank Lahey, MD, founded a group practice in 1923, his vision was unique: Every component of a patient's health care would be coordinated under one roof. Today, Lahey Clinic still offers a distinctive patient experience.

With its longstanding culture of specialized teams directly available to individual patients, and a work ethic that combines the highest competence with the utmost compassion, Lahey is unique among medical centers and teaching hospitals-because Lahey teams do more than care for you. They treat you right.

Lahey Clinic is a physician-led, nonprofit group practice. Nearly 450 physicians and more than 4,000 nurses, therapists and other support staff work together to provide compassionate care and superior patient outcomes. The Clinic's multidisciplinary approach allows patients access to preeminent physicians from virtually every medical specialty, who cooperate to develop personalized treatment plans for each patient.

From advanced technology to research and medical education, Lahey Clinic combines the renowned specialty resources of its medical centers with top-quality primary care services at community-based practices throughout northeastern Massachusetts.

Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington encompasses an ambulatory care center serving more than 3,000 patients each day and a 317-bed hospital. Lahey Clinic Medical Center, North Shore, in Peabody, serves more than 800 outpatients each day and includes a 10-bed hospital. Both feature 24-hour emergency departments, and an American College of Surgeons verified Level II Trauma Center is based at the Burlington facility.

  • The Cerebrovascular Disease Center is among the most advanced in the region for the treatment of strokes and brain aneurysms.
  • The liver transplantation team was the first in New England to perform adult living-donor transplant procedures. In addition, surgeons are using minimally invasive laparoscopic methods, reducing the surgical recovery time for conditions such as kidney disease and bladder cancer.
  • The Landsman Heart & Vascular Center at Lahey Clinic is one of the largest in the region. Through partnerships with local hospitals, Lahey physicians are providing New England communities with expertise in advanced cardiology services such as angioplasty and electrophysiology, and helping to train other physicians.

Lahey's community-based physicians have a wide range of special interests. The community group practices feature adult internists, pediatricians and family practice specialists. These practices enable Lahey Clinic to serve communities as diverse as Amesbury on the North Shore, Lexington in Boston's northwestern suburbs, and Haverhill on the New Hampshire border.

Teaching and Research

Lahey Clinic Medical Center is a teaching hospital for Tufts University School of Medicine. In addition, many of our physicians hold teaching assignments at Harvard Medical School and Boston University School of Medicine. The Clinic maintains residency and fellowship programs for more than 130 new physicians in multiple subspecialties.

As a research center, Lahey Clinic offers patients access to clinical trials of new therapies for diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and cataracts. Research programs at Lahey Clinic encompass more than 200 clinical trial protocols and participation in numerous national and international studies.

A Place Where Professionals Want to Work

At Lahey Clinic, patient care always comes first. Because of our focus on excellence in patient care, Lahey Clinic continues to attract the best people across all departments and disciplines.

The first requirement for creating this environment is the expectation that all colleagues, regardless of their job, will be treated with dignity and respect. Beyond that, colleagues are provided with a safe work environment where they feel confident in their daily practices, supported by modern technology.

Constantly scanning the market from which our colleagues are drawn, Lahey Clinic reviews benefits and pay practices to ensure we remain competitive. A variety of incentives are offered to encourage our colleagues to work the demanding shifts and schedules required for patient care.

Mandatory overtime is not part of our management practices at Lahey Clinic. Patient care staffing ratios are carefully engineered to meet patient acuity requirements.

A practice that is perhaps unique to Lahey involves our direct care staff reviewing patient acuity and matching patient needs to available care providers. Beds remain open only when they can be staffed according to these standards. This ensures the consistent delivery of quality patient care. An Environment Thriving with Education and Research

Lahey Clinic encourages colleagues to continually focus on learning. Lahey believes that continuing education gives colleagues the opportunity to acquire new skills and grow along with our organization.

Lahey Clinic Medical Center is a world-renowned teaching hospital affiliated with Tufts Medical School. A wide variety of medical/surgical internships, residencies, and fellowships are available.
