Site Objective
Labdude.com is a site with a mission, but until that mission is achieved, it's just another homepage clogging up domain space. :-)
The mission? The thing I'd like to see grow as part of Labdude.com is discussion and comparison of methods of science communication - the way we share scientific knowledge with the world. In this I include everything from the way we teach primary and secondary students about science to the way we teach science in universities, and from the way we present to our peers to the way we tell the world at large what is going on in the scientific world. The emphasis in all cases when looking at science communication is to find the way in which we can best explain science in an honest manner and in a way which can be easily understood by our target audience.
Along the line sometime, I'd also like this site to be a repository for discussion and knowledge about the way we go about "doing science". Not just the usual "did you know" stuff, nor even necessarily a place for new scientific discoveries to be reported on. What I'd like is more of a new investigator/research assistant/postdoctoral researcher/student resource, with a more general knowledge base about things like how to avoid certain costs in research, how to sell yourself to employers and funding bodies, how to keep on track during postgraduate study, etc. A large part of the emphasis would be on students, providing advice to help them through the psychological, economic and organisation challenge of a postgraduate degree. For me, this again reflects the importance of communication for scientists: not, in this case, for passing on "science", but for passing on the collection of hints, tricks, time-savers and budget ideas that we build up to allow us to get things done.
